Is the event rain or shine?
Yes. If there is a change to the schedule, we will post the information on the homepage of the Plane Pull Web site. Gates open Saturday at 10:30 am, with event festivities beginning at 11 am; gates close at 3:45 pm, with festivities ending at 4 pm. Please note: no backpacks, coolers, firearms, weapons or pets (besides service animals) will be allowed.  Please expect dealys at the enterance as all event attendees must go through security.

What IS the actual Plane Pull?
The Plane Pull is a fun team competition to see who can pull an Airbus A320 or Boeing 757 the fastest.  Teams are made up of 25 members, who line up adjacent to a huge rope attached to the aircraft. The starter signals when to start and starts the stopwatch. After the team pulls the aircraft 12 feet, the stopwatch stops and the elapsed time is recorded as the team score.  Each team is then weighed (as a group) and assembles to have their team photo taken.

Who can participate?
The Plane Pull is a team competition, so gather 24 of your coworkers, friends or family members (teams are made up of 25 people) and start lifting those weights! The Plane Pull is open to corporate groups, service organizations, churches and school groups – anyone who can organize a group and get people motivated to try something new and fun!

Kids can participate too! We leave it up to the parent/guardian to decide if they feel it is an age appropriate activity. We recommend kids who are in the older middle schooler/high school age range to participate. We have a Truck Pull for younger children.

How many teams participate?
11 teams participated in the first Plane Pull in 1993; 80 teams participated in 2016.

What is the minimum donation & how will our team be recognized?
Teams must contribute a minimum of $2000, or $80 per team member. Many corporate groups are sponsored by their companies, and/or team members raise pledges to cover the team fee. Teams can raise money online or organize offline fundraisers like carwashes, bakesales etc!  Fundraising is easy using our online fundraising tool!

  • Each team member receives a Plane Pull T-shirt
  • Teams that raise $2500 by August 1 have the opportunity to have their shirts customized with their team name or company logo on the back (must be registered, have raised $2500 and have logo and sizes in by August 1 to receive this benefit)
  • Teams receive a plaque and have a team photo taken at the event

Corporate sponsorship opportunities also are available. For sponsorship information, visit our Sponsorship page or e-mail Ellen Head, Director of Development.

What if our team doesn't raise $2000?
In order for your team to be eligible to pull, you must have raised at least $2000 by event day (September 23). If you do not reach the minimum, you will not be permitted to pull. The donations you received will not be refunded and will go to support the mission of Special Olympics Virginia. If you would like to ensure your team’s participation at the event you can authorize Special Olympics Virginia to charge a team member’s credit card for the amount equal to the difference of what you raise by event day, up to the $2000 minimum requirement. For example, if you have raised $1500 by event day, you can authorize Special Olympics Virginia to charge your card for an additional $500 and you will be permitted to pull. The maximum amount that will be charged to your card would be the minimum donation of $2000 if you do not raise additional funds prior to event day and you check in your team at check in on September 21-22. If you register for the event but do not reach the fundraising minimum ($2000) and you do not check in your team, your credit card will not be charged anything. Credit cards will be charged one month after event day to allow you additional time to fundraise post-event. To access the credit card security deposit form, please click here.

When, where & what time is the Plane Pull?
The Plane Pull will be held from 11 am to 4 pm Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia; gates officially open at 10:30 am and close at 3:45 pm. The competition and surrounding festival take place on the tarmac behind cargo buildings 5 & 6, with ample free parking on the airport grounds (shuttle buses transport people between parking and the festival entrance). Pulls occur between 11:30 am and 3:30 pm. The event is rain or shine.

Can we find out what time our team will be pulling?
Closer to the event date, we will reach out to the team captains in the order that they reached the fundraising minimum to pick an approximate pull time.  Your team can choose to pull earlier or later in the day to accommodate the schedules of team members, but because of the way the event runs, we will not be able to tell you exactly what time you’ll be pulling.  You will, however, know the order of pullers so you can plan accordingly.

What about bringing my family, friends and pets to cheer me on?
Bring your family, friends and coworkers to see you pull, but please leave your pets at home.  Animals – unless they’re service dogs – are not allowed on the tarmac, and don’t appreciate the loud airplane noises anyway (the Plane Pull site is adjacent to an operating runway).

The Plane Pull is open to the public with free admission, and there’s plenty for everyone to do at the festival, which surrounds the competition.

Is there lodging nearby for people coming from out of town?  Yes, the event hotel partner the Westin Washington Dulles Airport, is just a short distance away.

How do we get there?

  • From 495, take exit VA-267 (toll road) West toward Dulles Airport
  • After approximately 5 miles, exit via ramp at sign reading “Dulles Airport”
  • Continue onto the Dulles Airport Access Road
  • Once on airport grounds, exit via first ramp at sign reading “Rental Car Return and Services” onto Rudder Road
  • Continue straight, crossing Autopilot Way, into Plane Pull parking

Where do we park?
Ample free parking is available on the airport grounds. Look for the Plane Pull parking signs off Rudder Road. Shuttle buses then will take you from the parking lot to the festival entrance.

Where do we go once we arrive?
Volunteers and teams may enter through gate 116 at the far end of Cargo Building 6.  Volunteer and team check-in will be situated at this gate.

Shuttle buses will be circling the parking lot and picking up passengers at the marked bus stops for the short ride to the main festival entrance.

Vendors/Exhibitors/Car Show participants may enter the festival with their vehicles at gate 118 (between Cargo Buildings 5 and 6). Vendor and Car Show check-in will be situated at this gate.

If I’m flying in to display my aircraft, what details do I need to know?
